Every build in probably every action RPG starts with equipment, which in itself, gives you statistical bonuses that will help define your play-style and strategy.

How to Equip Items – Torchlight: Infinite
You can equip your gears by opening up your bag on the upper right corner of the screen. This will open up your Inventory. In the Character tab, there will be nine equipment slots available for tinkering.
Select the gear that you want to equip and click Gear in the yellow box. Finally, this will show up in your Equipment panel.
You can pick up gears dropped by enemies on the map. The dropped loot will level up as enemies level up as you progress in the game. You don’t have to worry about finding the best gear as a newbie. You just have to be ready to replace your old gear with new higher-level items that have better stats as you move along the game.
